When the dust settled, it was Dylan Westbrook claiming his second straight win with the Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars and Jesse Costa leading all 20 laps on route to victory with the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars. Both stock car divisions raced under an abbreviated but high-octane format that saw Trevor DeBoer score the win with the Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks and Kyle Wert in victory lane with the HRW Automotive Mini Stocks.
Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Cars
Jim Huppunen and Shone Evans started on the front row for the 20-lap Kool Kidz-Corr/Pak 360 Sprint Car A-Feature. Evans took the early lead to pace the opening two laps until fourth-starting Scott Kreutter raced to the point on lap three. Kreutter held the top spot for nine laps until Dylan Westbrook was able to get past and drive to his second straight victory to start the Ohsweken season.
The Hill’s Racing/Nathan Ackland Racing team swept the qualifying heats for the night as Westbrook, Evans and Mack DeMan all claimed checkered flags. Lewiston, NY’s Derek Jonathan scored the win in the B-Main.
Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars
Jesse Costa and Nick Sheridan paced the field to the green flag for the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars season opening feature. Costa was quick to jump out to the lead and never looked back as he paced all 20 laps to score a win in his first start since he was injured in an accident at Humberstone Speedway last August.
Behind Costa, opening night winner Liam Martin was making a mad dash to the front and furiously drove his way to a second-place finish after starting in 18th. Steven Beckett also had a strong run from 14th to third while Beachville, Ont. native DJ Christie came from dead last in 24th starting spot after transferring from the B-Main to finish fifth.
Lucas Smith, Costa, Brian Nanticoke and Hannah Ferrell won their qualifying heats to begin the nights while Johnny Miller and Caleb Wood won the B-Mains.
Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks
Chris Hale and Aaron Rewutzsky brought the 29-car field of Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks to the line for the green flag. Hale led the opening two laps until third-starting Jim Lampman raced to the point on lap three. Lampman held the top spot past the halfway point until opening night winner Dave Bailey took the lead on lap 13.
Bailey was under heavy pressure from 13th-starting Trevor DeBoer in the closing laps and the underdog DeBoer got past the reigning champion with three laps to go to score his first victory of the season. Bailey, Ken Sargent, Logan Shwedyk and Rob Hoskins rounded out the top-five.
Bailey and DeBoer won the pair of qualifying heat races while Ryan Beagle was the fast qualifier in the Time Hot Laps session.
HRW Automotive Mini Stocks
Tristan Da Silva and Cole Hardy were on the front row for the HRW Automotive Mini Stock 20-lap Feature that saw 32 cars take the green flag under the high octane format. Da Silva led the opening lap until fifth-starting Ryan Hillar raced out front on lap two. Hillar paced the field until lap 10 when Tim DeBoer took the point for a lap only for Hillar to take it back on lap 12.
On lap 13 though, it was Kyle Wert who raced forward from 14th to take the lead and paced the field the rest of the way to score his first victory of the season. Invader Kyle Rothwell grabbed a second-place finish while Sean Iftody, DeBoer and Nick Masi rounded out the top-five.
Iftody and DeBoer won the pair of qualifying races after Iftody was quickest in the Timed Hot Laps session that determined the heat race lineups.
