Can Am TQ Midget And OMRS Join The Show At Peterborough Speedway

PETERBOROUGH, ON (June 16, 2019)- Central Ontario’s favourite place to race roars back to life on Saturday June 22nd as the popular Can Am TQ Midget Series rolls into Peterborough Speedway for its annual appearance. Also on the program will be the home track Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck and Late Model divisions, along with the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series.

Through its more than 50 years of existence, many of racing’s marquee names – including Supermodified stars Bentley Warren and Joe Gosek, NASCAR’s Ken Schrader, World of Outlaws stand-out Dave Blaney and USAC legend Jack Hewitt – have all raced with the popular tour. While the club boasts overall membership numbers in the triple digits, its today’s driver roster that grabs the headlines. Current point leader Darren Dryden, Brandon Zavarella and Steven Murdock are just three of the names to watch in this year’s action.

Round 1 of the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series went into the record books with a first time main event winner. Saturday, June 22nd, the OMRS powered by Torque Builders Inc. and Gen-3 Electrical pays its second visit of the year at Canada’s Toughest 1/3-Mile Paved Oval.

“Our teams hadn’t raced together as a group since last year’s Championship Clash at Peterborough so everyone was looking forward to getting the new season underway,” said Randy Hollingsworth, who along with Rick Warnes and Bill Pickford make-up the OMRS set of officials. “It took a couple of weeks longer than everyone had expected, but we were all happy to see each other and get back on the track to put on a show for the fans.”

Hollingsworth says the season opening event had several twists and turns in addition to the ones on the racetrack. The trip to victory lane by Josh Gruntz was the first main event win of his career. There were a few heat race triumphs over the years and one night when he raced at Mosport, they had trophies for the top three and he finished third. Dwight Brown’s third place run left him tied for second place in the early season standings. The former series champion is using #61 as a tribute to his stepfather Bill Pickford, instead of his customary #2.

Also on the show for Saturday, June 22nd at Peterborough Speedway will be the held-over Jiffy Lube Mini Stock feature from Saturday, June 1st. Pit gates open at 2:30, with the spectator grandstands unlocked at 5:00. The night’s first green flag is set for 6:00.

Rolling the schedule ahead to Saturday, June 29th finds the Summer Kick-Off, presented by Lucas Oil Products with Bone Stock, Mini Stock, Super Stock and Late Model action; plus a National Qualifier for the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends.

Since 1967, Peterborough Speedway has been thrilling fans with the best in hometown short track Saturday night racing excitement. This year’s edition – October 11th through 12th – will once again feature the Electric City 167, a 167 lap combined Late Model/Pro Late Model spectacular with some of the country’s top drivers. The season-ending event also features Bone Stock, Mini Stock, Super Stock, Hot Rod, Modified, Legend and Midget racing.
