The 22-year-old Newmarket native was drafted 34th overall and signed by the Leafs organization in 2015. After playing the 2016-17 season with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League – and starting there in 2017-18 - Dermott made his NHL debut with the Leafs in early 2018, playing with the big club until they were eliminated in the playoffs.
He opened the 2018-19 season on the Leafs roster, where this smart, mobile, two-way player quickly become a fan favourite. He underwent shoulder surgery recently but is expected to be ready to go at some point in the fall.
Dermott will give the command to drivers to start their engines ahead of Sunday’s 1:30 pm start to Clarington 200 – the opening round of the NASCAR PInty’s Series, Canada’s national stock car championship.
A full slate of racing action and family-friendly off-track activities are scheduled for the long week event, including a Saturday night fireworks show and live music.
